Susan L. F. McLellan, MD, MPH

Clinical Assistant Professor of Tropical Medicine

Dr. McLellan completed her medical education at Tulane University of New Orleans, after pursuing a degree in anthropology at Princeton University and a Master’s in Public Health at the University of California at Berkeley.  She began a combined residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at Los Angeles County – University of Southern California and completed that program at the University of Miami – Jackson Memorial Hospital.  After a Fogarty fellowship in Pediatric Infectious Diseases which included work in Haiti, Dr. McLellan went on to Emory University for her fellowship in adult Infectious Diseases, and stayed on there as faculty in the HIV care program.  In 1997 Dr. McLellan returned to her home town of New Orleans and now holds dual faculty appointments in the Section of Infectious Diseases in the School of Medicine, and in the Tropical Medicine Department of the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine of Tulane University.

Dr. McLellan’s primary interests are in the areas of tropical and travel medicine, and the delivery of care in resource-poor environments.  She first visited Haiti in 1982, and has been involved in teaching, clinical, and research projects in that country. Recently she has been acting as faculty for courses taught at the School of Public Health in Rwanda.  She has also had experience in Francophone Africa, Egypt, Jamaica, Thailand, and Peru.  She is one of the core faculty for the Master’s of Public Health in Tropical Medicine at Tulane and teaches clinical tropical medicine as well as general infectious diseases at the School of Medicine.
